Iowa IPL is honored and excited to work with three student leaders from Iowa colleges across our state. Our student leaders will collaborate to create our 2022/23 faith statement, opinion-editorials, and our larger public event in the fall. Each of our student leaders bring different expertise and experiences as well as a strong commitment to climate justice. Please welcome our Called to Climate Action student leaders and learn more about them in their own words below!

Kaelyn Howe, Clarke University
Hello, I am Kaelyn Howe! I am currently studying history and Spanish at Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa. I am a lifelong Iowan and have spent the majority of my life outside. Whether it’s hiking, kayaking, camping, walking the dogs, or spending time on the Mississippi River, I love nothing more than my time in nature. I am excited to combine and bring forth my passions as a student leader in this year’s Called to Climate Action program. I cannot wait to root deeper in my own faith and turn my thoughts and feelings into actions to help Iowans become a united force against climate change!

Samantha Sancen, St. Ambrose University
I am currently a third year at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, IA. I am double majoring in Political Science and Theology. I was born and raised in the Quad Cities on the border of Illinois and Iowa. Other than Iowa IPL, I am also working for the Diocese of Davenport as a Laudato Si’ Advocate. This summer, I am also an orientation leader for SAU. During the school year, I am a Theology Work Study, president of the St. Ambrose College Democrats, a Student Government Senator, Gray Matters Collective Leader, on the Model United Nations team and a member of the Triota Honor Society.

Mika Kooistra, Dordt University
Hi!! My name is Mika Kooistra and I’m from a small town in Northwest Ontario called Emo. For the last few years I’ve been attending Dordt University in Sioux Center, Iowa and am studying Environmental Science & Biology. I’m excited to be a part of the Student Leaders Program with Iowa IPL this summer because of my passion for sustainable agriculture and its implications for the state of Iowa in particular. This summer will be an opportunity for me to learn alongside others about how we can take meaningful climate action within communities of faith.
We were able to build this team of Iowa student leaders due to the generous support of our individual and organizational donors. Thank you!
