A webinar with Dr. William Gutowski

Wednesday, October 28 | 12:00–1:00 PM

Online – Zoom

Just in time for the spooky season, join us for an hour that’s equal parts science and seasonal fun. Dr. William Gutowski, Professor Emeritus of Meteorology at Iowa State University, will walk us through what the data actually says about Iowa’s climate future. But just note: it might give you a chill or two.

Dr. Gutowski will cover the fundamentals of climate science before turning to Iowa specifically: what our weather and climate trends have looked like so far, and what the latest projections suggest for the decades ahead. He’ll also demystify El Niño, telling us what it is, how it shapes our weather and climate patterns, and why it acts as an amplifier on top of the broader warming trend.

Dr. Gutowski brings decades of research experience to this conversation, with a career focused on atmospheric dynamics, the hydrologic cycle, and regional climate modeling across North America and beyond. He’s also an active member of St. John’s by the Campus Episcopal Parish of Ames. This webinar is a chance to hear directly from one of the scientists who has spent his career studying exactly these questions—grounded in evidence, relevant to where we live, and accessible to anyone curious about what’s ahead. We’ll wrap up the webinar by hearing from our Associate Director, Tim Gossett, with some practical next steps you can consider taking in your faith community.

No background in climate science is required – just curiosity about the weather outside your own door.

Bring your questions for the Q&A time, or email them in advance to info@iowafaithandclimate.org.
