That’s why Iowa IPL along with several environmental groups are working together to hold MidAmerican accountable to their 100% renewable energy commitment.

Our friends at the Environmental Law & Policy Center, Iowa Environmental Council, and Sierra Club filed an analysis with the Iowa Utilities Board on December 15th, 2021 that “shows that MidAmerican Energy could save Iowans nearly $1.2 billion by retiring all of its coal plants by 2030.”

2020 production from Walter Scott #3, Walter Scott #4, Neal #3, Neal #4, Louisa, and Ottumwa [coal plants], was not required for MidAmerican customers.

MidAmerican is spending big to promote its “100% Renewable Energy” smokescreen, while spending $1.2 billion of our money to keep their coal plants running. We must continue to keep them accountable to their 100% renewable energy commitment.

The total excess coal generation from MidAmerican was 7,222,282 MWh, resulting in 8,889 tons of SO2, 5,402 tons of Nox, 33 pounds of mercury, and 8,426,410 tons of CO2 unnecessarily released into the air we breathe, and 195,579 tons of fly ash waste placed in Iowa landfills.

We envision a world where we live in right relationship with our neighbors and planet; retiring Iowa’s coal plants by 2030 aligns with our vision for equitable climate solutions and our moral obligation to address the climate crisis.

The continued burning of coal by MidAmerican negatively impacts the financial well-being of every Iowan. The annual financial impact to Iowan’s health, crop loss, and climate impact is $1.317 billion to $4.624 billion.
