On June 2, 2014, the Environmental Protection Agency announced new safeguards that would limit the amount of carbon pollution that can be emitted by power plants.

Carbon pollution is a major driver of global climate change which threatens the health of our families, the well-being of our communities, and ultimately the earth. Current impacts of climate-disrupting carbon dioxide emissions include severe storms, deadly heat waves, drought, flooding, and wildfires, not to mention the public health impacts. Power plants account for 40% of U.S. carbon emissions.

Iowa IPL is hosting a citizens’ hearing on the proposed carbon pollution standards for existing power plants on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Franklin Avenue Library in Des Moines, Iowa. At the hearing we will be receiving public comments that will be sent to the EPA.

We are asking those who would like to speak at the hearing to register in advance, and to limit testimony to three minutes.  We will be taping the testimony and will also collect written comments to send to the EPA.
