Faith in a Changing Climate Conference
Iowa Interfaith Power & Light’s 4th Annual Faith in a Changing Climate Conference will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2014 at Tifereth Israel Synagogue, 924 Polk Blvd. in Des Moines. This year’s theme is Telling Your Story.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., with the event starting at 10:00 a.m. The conference will conclude at 4:00 p.m. Register here.
Our keynote speaker for the event is The Reverend Canon Sally Grover Bingham. Rev. Bingham is an Episcopal priest and Canon for the Environment in the Diocese of California, and was one of the first faith leaders to fully recognize the changing climate as a moral issue. She is founder and president of The Regeneration Project and its Interfaith Power & Light campaign, which currently has 15,000 congregation members in forty states. Rev. Bingham serves on the national board of the Environmental Defense Fund, and the advisory board of both the Union of Concerned Scientists and Climate One. She has received many awards including in 2012, the Rachel Carson Women in Conservation Award from the Audubon Society. Rev. Bingham is the lead author of Love God Heal Earth, a collection of 21 essays on environmental stewardship by religious leaders, published by St. Lynn’s Press.
The afternoon will feature Isaac Luria of Auburn Seminary and Auburn Action in New York City who will lead us in the workshop “Telling Your Story.” As people of faith, we are people of the story. Research and practice shows that expert storytellers can move people through moral values to act for social change more effectively than through policy arguments or calling on narrow self-interest. In this workshop we’ll learn to deploy our strongest assets – our stories, our humanity, and our faith traditions – as we advocate for change.
Registration for the event is $40, which includes a light continental breakfast and climate-friendly lunch. Please note any dietary restrictions (gluten free, dairy free, vegan, etc.) in the “Notes” box on the registration form.
Would your organization like to have an exhibit at our event? Exhibitor registration is available for $50, which includes registration for one representative from your organization.

Food, Faith, and Climate Workshops
Climate change is related to our food choices.
When we sit down to dinner, we may not think about global warming, but one third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions are connected to our food system. At every meal, we can make a real difference that ensures a more climate-friendly food system. And luckily, the ethical choices are also pleasurable ones that improve the health of the planet and our bodies!
Food • Faith • Climate: Connecting the Dots, a program of Iowa Interfaith Power & Light, invites you to be part of the solution. We look at:
• how our food system contributes to climate change
• what our faith traditions say about sustainable food systems
• food practices in our own households
• a personal plan for more climate friendly choices
The workshop includes:
• tips, resources and pocket guides for more climate-friendly choices
• a low-carbon footprint lunch
• afternoon tour and activities
